Why Iron-On Labels Aren’t Sticking (Easy Fix Guide)

Why Your Iron-On Labels Aren’t Sticking (And How to Fix It Properly)
As one of the UKs leading label experts, we feel obligated to share with you that if your iron-on labels aren’t staying in place, don’t worry, this is one of the most common issues people run into! The good news is that it’s almost always an easy fix.
In nearly every case, the problem comes down to heat.
The Real Issue: Not Enough Heat
Iron-on labels rely on heat to activate the adhesive. If the adhesive doesn’t fully melt into the fabric, the label won’t bond properly and may start peeling off after as little as one wash or wearing it just once.
Here’s the tricky part:
Not all irons are created equal.
What one iron considers “medium heat” could be completely different from another. One iron might run at 50°C, while another might be closer to 75°C on the same setting.
So even if you’re following instructions perfectly, your iron might simply not be hot enough.
How to Find the Perfect Heat Setting
The best way to get this right is to test it.
Grab a piece of scrap fabric or an old shirt and follow this process:
-
Apply the label using your current heat setting
-
Press for about 20 seconds, repeating 2 to 3 times
-
Check the label carefully
If nothing changes, increase the heat slightly and try again.
What You’re Looking For
As you increase the heat, you’ll notice a small but important sign:
The label will begin to slightly crease or shrivel.
This is actually a good thing.
It means you’ve reached the point where the adhesive is fully activating.
The Sweet Spot (Where the Magic Happens)
You don’t want to go too far. Don't worry though, you can't actually burn or damage our labels.
Here’s a simple way to dial it in:
-
If nothing happens at 20 seconds → increase to 25 seconds
-
If it shrivels after 3 presses at 25 seconds → try:
-
2 presses at 25 seconds
-
1 press at 20 seconds
-
The goal is to land just before the label starts to shrivel.
That’s where the adhesive bonds perfectly to the fabric.
Why This Works
Once the adhesive reaches the right temperature:
-
It melts into the fibers of the fabric
-
It creates a strong, long-lasting bond
-
The label becomes resistant to washing and wear
If it’s under-heated, it simply sits on the surface and will peel away.
Still Not Working?
If you’ve tested the heat properly and are still having issues, don’t worry.
At that point, it’s worth reaching out so the issue can be resolved properly, whether that’s replacing the order or troubleshooting further.
Final Reassurance
These labels are designed to be extremely durable and reliable when applied correctly. Once you find the right heat setting for your iron, you shouldn’t experience them coming off.
