Eco-Efficient Labelling™
Eco-Efficient Labelling™
Here at Labels4school, we are not just another just another “*green-washing” label brand. We will not feed you information that states we are "Green", "Eco-friendly" or "Sustainable". The truth is that any label manufacturer in the UK that says this, is green-washing you, and that is just a fancy way of saying they are lying! Parents deserve transparency — not marketing shortcuts.
What is greenwashing?
Greenwashing is when a company presents a product as environmentally friendly using vague, misleading or incomplete claims.
Common greenwashing tactics include:
• using terms like eco, green, or sustainable without evidence
• saying a product is “anti-microbial” or “anti-bacterial”
• highlighting one positive feature while ignoring larger impacts
• implying environmental benefits that are standard across the industry
• using imagery or language that suggests environmental purity
Under UK advertising rules, environmental claims must be clear, accurate and substantiated.
Our competitors use terminology like:
• Durability = sustainability
• Claim "eco benefits" via durability, longevity and reuse potential
• Prevent lost clothing waste
• Durability & longevity (e.g "last 60 washes") - but still comes in plastic packaging.
• Eco messaging focused on quality
• Or they have no stance on environmental impacts of labels and labelling.
AND they ignore:
• packaging waste
• plastic reduction
• lifecycle transparency
• circular school ecosystems
Why is this a good example of green-washing and not possibly true?
1. “Durable = eco-friendly” is not the same as sustainable.
The reality: durability reduces waste — but materials still matter!
• still plastic-based
• still not recyclable
• still made from fossil fuels
• STILL contributes to microplastics!
2. Packaging sustainability is rarely addressed.
Most brands ship in plastic sleeves, use non-recyclable backing and use laminated paper/vinyl. None of which are good for the environment.
3. No lifecycle transparency.
No one explains the carbon footprint, the lifecycle impact, the microplastic impact or textile waste reduction metrics. Which for us, leaves a HUGE credibility gap!
4. No circularity messaging
No one talks about reuse cycles, resale & hand-me-down culture or school lost property recovery systems!
So how can they be marked as eco-friendly?
This is a logical gap parents don’t always realise. Which is why we are here, and we have your back both when it comes to labelling and telling the truth!
WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme)
*WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) is a UK-based charity working globally to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. This is some of their published findings:
Known facts from WRAPs research:
• UK disposes of ~300,000 tonnes of clothing annually (WRAP).
• Extending garment life by 9 months reduces environmental footprint by 20–30%.
• Schools discard large volumes of unclaimed lost property each term.
• Lost uniform is frequently replaced.
🎯 Case Study – using conservative figures.
Let’s assume:
• Average primary school: 400 pupils
• Conservative lost uniform replacement rate: 1 item per child per year
• Average weight per uniform item (jumper/shirt): ~400g
If even 25% of those replacements are due to lost items, that’s:
400 pupils × 0.25 = 100 garments unnecessarily replaced
100 garments × 0.4kg = 40kg textile waste per school annually
If 1,000 schools reduced that by just 50% through better labelling:
40kg × 1,000 schools × 50% = 20,000kg (20 tonnes) of textile waste avoided annually.
Our pillars:
🌱 1. Waste Reduction Impact
Our labels prevent lost uniform, we support reuse & hand-me-downs and we aim to reduce textile landfill.
🌱 2. Plastic Reduction Commitment
We will only use plastic where durability demands and there is no alternative solution. We do and will continue to use biodegradable bag tags and constantly continue to explore and search for recycled substrates that can ultimately replace any plastic items.
🌱 3. Sustainable Packaging
We use plant-based packaging and where possible, use recyclable or recycled backing materials with the aim of constantly trying to reduce our packaging footprint - even though we are already the best at this.
🌱 4. School Ecosystem
We encourage you to pass uniforms down and keep items in circulation. On our end, we will support the PTFA and/or school resale shop. We are already working on something HUGE that will help everyone achieve this easily. Helping extend garment life reduces environmental impact and lowers its environmental footprint.
🌱 5. Honest Sustainability
We believe parents deserve transparency, not buzzwords. We’re not chasing eco buzzwords.
We’re reducing waste where it matters most.
Less waste. Less replacing. Less landfill.
What do we believe?
1. We are the smarter, lower-impact way to label. Parents want honesty, not greenwashing! So, we promise to tell you the real environmental impact.
2. We are the eco-efficient labelling for modern families. Parents understand the need for durability. So, we minimise plastic where it matters.
3. We strive to be the definition of Sustainability without compromise and reducing textile waste through smarter labelling.
4. We are not plastic-free. Packaging is an under-discussed topic. So, zero-plastic packaging is standard with priority placed on biodegradable and plant-based packaging like Nativia (current packaging material).
5. We do not greenwash and pretend to be something we can't be.
6. We are committed to continuously improve materials, packaging and processes to reduce environmental impact without compromising durability.
7. We are committed to producing the longest-lasting labels in order to prevent lost clothing and reduce the need to replace garments. Reducing replacement clothing lowers textile waste and environmental impact.
8. Waste reduction beyond labels. Our competitors don't mention circular school uniform reuse, second-hand hand-me-down systems or PTA resale schemes. We say SUPPORT THEM!
9. Preventing lost uniform supports waste reduction.
10. No exaggerated environmental claims — just logical waste prevention.
What we are is the most eco-efficient & waste-reducing label system we can be. And that's what makes us the best in the sustainability department.
Introducing Eco-Efficient Labelling™
At Labels4School, we believe sustainability is about reducing overall environmental impact, and not making unrealistic claims.
Instead of claiming to be “plastic-free”, we focus on eco-efficiency:
• preventing clothing waste
• reducing packaging impact
• minimising plastic use where durability demands it
• using biodegradable alternatives where possible
• supporting circular reuse of school uniforms
WRAP research shows:
• Reuse provides greater environmental benefit than recycling.
• Keeping clothing in use longer has significantly lower carbon impact than producing new garments.
Translation:
Helping a uniform be reused (hand-me-down or resale) avoids the environmental cost of manufacturing a replacement.
Our Approach:
♻Waste prevention
Our eco-efficient labelling helps clothing stay in circulation longer — reducing unnecessary textile waste, saving money and lowering environmental impact - and keeps it out of a landfill!
🚮Responsible Materials
Durability is essential to prevent waste. We minimise plastic use and continuously implement lower-impact materials where possible.
🌱Plant-based packaging
We use plant-based packaging to reduce fossil-fuel plastic use.
🌍Biodegradable products where possible
Items such as bag tags are available in biodegradable materials. All our packaging is also biodegradable.
🔁Designed for reuse & hand-me-downs
We support hand-me-downs, resale and reuse programs.
⚖Plastic used only where durability demands
Where plastic ensures longevity and waste reduction, we use it responsibly.
✅Smarter for the planet
Our labels are engineered for durability to reduce clothing waste, while our packaging and product development focus on reducing environmental impact wherever possible.
School uniforms shouldn’t end up in landfill.
Less waste. More reuse.
• If a uniform item is lost and replaced,
• The environmental footprint of a new school blazer/shirt is avoided when it’s returned instead.
Then:
Labelling reduces unnecessary replacement purchases → so we support waste reduction.
